The MSA mental skills are derived from years of research in social-cognitive psychology as it applies to educational psychology, health psychology, developmental psychology, organizational psychology, and sports psychology. The MSA was developed to guide and complement cognitive-behavioral approaches to counseling and therapy. The MSA report is intended to provide sports psychologists with information they need; it guides and supports their clinical insights. The MSA mental skills profile of an athlete helps sports psychologists focus on the “right stuff” as the sports psychologist, coach, and athlete work together to enhance the athlete’s success.

THE VALUE IN THE MSA

Sport psychologists use the MSA to gain greater insight into an athlete’s mental skills and how these skills vary from situation to situation. The MSA results are diagnostic and can assist the sport psychologist determine a course of action. For the athlete, the MSA provides the information needed to increase his or her awareness (Open to Feedback) of the mental skills that influence performance. Open to Feedback is an important step in performance improvement.
